KINESIOL 1F03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Enterocyte, Lipase, Goblet Cell
Document Summary
The process where food is broken down into nutrients, so that they can be absorbed. The throat must be arranged so that swallowing and breathing don"t interfere with each other. The body needs a passageway that allows the food to pass the diaphragm into the stomach. The materials of the digestive tract have to move at a steady pace, so that all the reactions required can be completed. For digestive enzymes to work, the food needs to be broken down into small particles: however, the cells of the gastrointestinal tract (digestive system) must also be protected from the digestive enzymes that they secrete. Waste must be eliminated in a controlled manner. Food is chewed into smaller pieces to increase surface area. The food is mixed with fluids from food such as beverages and salivary glands to aid with swallowing. The food or bolus, now travels down the pharynx: the pharynx directs food from the mouth to the esophagus.
