Document Summary

Contains 2 specialized structures used in balance called the utricle and the saccule. They are mainly used for static balance or static equilibrium. Static equilibrium is our head s position relative to the ground; which way is our head tilted or is it up right. The utricle is gathering information in a horizontal plane. The saccule is gathering information in a vertical plane. The region of specialized epithelial as known as the maculae. Within the regions of the utricle and the saccule, there are very specialized epithelial cells. Contains very specialized cells known as hair cells (similar to the ones in the cochlea) Within the otolithic membrane there are crystallized structures known as otoliths. Also have hair bundles on the top of the hair cells. The hair bundles are stuck in a gelatinous membrane called the otolithic membrane. The job of the otoliths is to create mass/weight for this otolithic membrane.
