KINESIOL 1Y03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Keratin, Mitosis, Transitional Epithelium
Document Summary
Groups of specialized cells in their surrounding substances. Staining and imaging techniques to look at cellular and non-cellular components on microscopic level. Densely packed cells with very little extracellular matrix (substances between the cells) Protective > skin, digestive, respiratory, urogenital, heart&blood vessels, cavities. 3 distinct cell surfaces: free (apical) openings to external envmt or cavities. Basement is like a glue acellular glue > has no cells but provides a surface for epi cells to stay together and with connective tissue. Avascular (no blood vessels go thru it) gas and nutrient exchange (diffusion)! Protection e. g. epithelium lining the mouth from chewing. Microvilli fingerlike projections out of epi cells > increase surface area for absorption/secretion. Cilia move materials across cell surface, wavelike movement. E. g. moving zygote to uterus, moving mucus and foreign material out of bronchi. For stratified, only the deepest part of the layer contacts the basement membrane.
