May look different from cell to cell, depending on the cell"s function. Production of the protein and lipid components of most of the cell"s organelles. Moving proteins and other carbohydrates to the golgi apparatus, to the plasma membrane, to the lysosomes. Two types of er rough er and smooth er. The same types of membranes but different shapes. Usually interconnected and the proteins and membranes made by the rough er move into the smooth er to be transferred to other locations. A network of tubules and flattened sacs. Very extensive extending from the cell membrane through the cytoplasm and forming a continuous connection with the nuclear envelope. As ribosome builds the amino acid chain, the chain is pushed into the er. When the protein is complete, the rough er pinches off a vesicle.
