Participants immerged arm into cold water bath, followed by exercise. One half told that an increase in cold tolerance post-exercise is healthy. Other half told that a decrease in cold tolerance is healthy. People select actions that are diagnostic of favourable outcomes. Both groups conformed to what they were told was healthy. They were convinced that perception of pain had changed, when it was the mentality made them perceive the pain differently. Placebo shows that our beliefs of if the treatment will work has a huge effect on the actual efficacy of the treatment. Case study: girl with dramatic mood swings, anxiety, hallucinations. Maybe she"s on drugs or she has some mental illness like schizophrenia. Medication is not working to cure her symptoms like depression. Symptoms accompanied by physiological symptoms: racing heart, nausea, joint pain. Mental symptoms could be a result of something physical.
