Symptoms: chronic cough, blood in mucus of cough, high fever, night sweats, weight loss. Most children are vaccinated against tb, need to be vigilant about child vaccinations otherwise epidemics may return. Most common among poor people huge campaigns out to stop tb. Efforts to quarantine people in tb sanitariums housed all people with tb. 50% chance of getting tb if you went to the sanitarium more likely to die in 5 years. Not everyone with the bacteria develops the disease. Only 1/10 develops tb even though all 10 are carriers of the bacteria. Thomas holmes study interested in why only certain people got tb. Previous psychosocial stresses are linked to development of tb. Asked about financial hardship, job changes, residential changes, changes in social relations, irregular habits, personal crisis, work stress, marital status. All employees had the bacteria, but the ones who developed the disease are more likely to develop these psychological stressors than the employees who didn"t develop tb.
