Nutrients, waste products, gas exchange supports metabolism. Transport of hormones, components of immune system, molecules required for coagulation, enzymes, nutrients, gases, waste products, etc. Regulate blood pressure (blood vessels function to do this) by changing vessel diameter. Smooth muscle contraction/relaxation (increasing/decreasing pressure depending on situation exercise, increased need for blood flow to exercising muscles, basal dilation, and thus smooth muscle must relax) Directs blood flow redistributes blood flow ex. Take some blood away from non-exercising organs to give instead to exercising, active muscle tissue. Arteries transport blood away from the heart (for the most part oxygenated) elastic, muscular, arterioles. Capillaries site of exchange with tissues (ex. Veins thinner walls than arteries, contain less elastic tissue and fewer smooth muscle cells lesser degree of basal dilation and basal constriction (venules, small veins, medium or large veins) Basement membrane outer covering made of connective tissue.
