KINESIOL 2YY3 Lecture 17: CHAPTER-17
Document Summary
Chapter 17 - functional organization of the endocrine system. Endocrine system: functions signal, messenger type system throughout body. Four general classes: autocrine, signals generated when cells secrete certain chemicals, chemicals regulate function of individual cell; usually negative feedback manner. Into cv, affect tissues far from secreting cells. Characteristics of the endocrine system: glands that secrete chemical messengers (hormones) into circulatory system dire(cid:272)tl(cid:455) changes cell physiology. Hormones: chemicals secreted in small amounts, affect on many cells throughout body. Significant affect altering physiological process of many cells: secreted into intercellular space. Cells secrete them into space, move into cv system, move throughout body. Cells will take up hormones, alter physiology: transported some distance in circulatory system, acts on target tissues elsewhere in body (cid:271)i(cid:374)d to re(cid:272)eptors. Target cell must have receptors, proteins, embedded in membrane. Recognize the hormone: regulate a(cid:272)tivities of (cid:271)od(cid:455) stru(cid:272)tures all tissues. Endocrine system will have affect on all tissues.
