KINESIOL 3B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Spinal Cord Injury, Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Cord
Document Summary
Disorders that: immobilize lower limbs, limit ambulation, affect other body movement, emphasis on movement potential rather than on restrictions of each disability. Teach substitute motor skills that may allow participation in play/sports: improve motor skills, increase self-esteem, improve fitness, enjoy play/sports may then seek out when not in specialized program. Spinal cord injury: affects muscular innervation, the higher the injury, the less movement available, traumatic spinal cord injury. Complete at level cord has been completely severed, no connection above and below injury. Often times not complete potential for partial signal transmission past injury and back up: higher the injury, expect less potential movement. 4-5 cm can make a huge difference in participation in types of pa. Quadriplegia all 4 limbs and trunk: above t-2, up to have incomplete lesion. Sport participation: t2-t6 complete, no sitting balance, t7-l1 complete, some sitting balance, l2 and below, normal trunk control. High level still able to participate, still invite to play.
