Chronic neurological disorder of posture and movement caused by a defect or lesion of the immature brain. Can range from mild clumsiness to severe: almost no control of motor function (eating, breathing, adl) Occurs in area of brain that does not get enough o2 for a short period of time (causes brain damage in immature brain) 90% of cases occur before/during birth due to anoxia, hypoxia, asphyxia. More common if maternal age is less than 20 or greater than 34. 10% of cases occur postnatally due to infection, trauma (accidental or abuse), toxins, oxygen deprivation. Shaking baby syndrome: baby doesn"t stop crying so parents start shaking baby, rapid movement of head back and forth can cause oxygen deprivation to brain and leads to cp. Multi-disability (mental retardation, speech, learning, visual, hearing, perceptual problems, seizures, reflex problems) Double hemiplegia (all four limbs involved, one side more than another) Tetraplegia (all four limbs affected, three more than the fourth)
