Document Summary
Spinal canal funnel very top of cervical spine has largest area to accommodate spinal cord, which has its largest cross sectional area at top. It tapers and the vertebrae shrink as you travel down the cervical spine decreasing buffer space for spinal cord to move around in. Neutral spine slight lordosis (all za joints are engaged optimal position) Flexion disengages za joints and you lose stability of vertebrae makes it easier for things to slip out of place and fracture. Spinal column most ligamentus and muscle support is primarily on back. Intervertebral disk work like cushions in cervical spine they deal with shearing loads. Flexion decompresses disks, axial load can compress one side of disk more, and decreases disks ability to absorb impact due to only being able to use half of disk. Dorsal roots (sensory): incomplete spinal cord injury can affect only one part (sensory or motor, but not both both would be a complete spinal cord injury)
