LABRST 2G03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: World Trade Organization, Strategic Dominance, Informal Sector
Document Summary
Developed to analyse the reorganization of properties beyond commodities (what does it look like on a global scale) Important for understanding the way in which unpaid domestic services have been globalized. As the cost of living has raised in the north and we have less social programs, there"s been an increased need for care work (ie. child and elderly care) Lot of this work is being done through the migration of women from the global south to the global north. When these women travel it reorganizes how care is provided in the global south. Women are leaving behind their children and parents to provide for the domestic needs of those in the global north. Leaving their families behind with friends/own parents to get paid (unable to care for their own) Concept of the global care change is important because it reflects this double movement: outsourcing and migration. Generated competition between workers since the 1970s.
