This term is used to highlight the fact that the term white is culturally created. Associated with civilization, progress, rationality in contrast with non-whites who are considered the opposite of this, savage, reckless. Those of american - white ethnicity are favoured and preferred. They hold the standard of what work should be like/how it should be done. They are viewed as being higher than those of other ethnicities. Term used instead of racism to highlight the roots of the racist hierarchy. Nationalism, like race, boarders only exist through comparison to others nations/boarders. There is a hierarchy involved in this comparison. Nationalism is a critical part of how we come to consent the idea of boarders. The existing of boarders serve to create vulnerable and malleable workers. They allow for those in the global north to exploit and take advantage of workers in other lesser boarders such as nations located in the global south.
