Taft-hartley law, 1947 this was driven by a sense that unions have gotten too big and powerful (clip the wings of unions) Also passed by concerns about the cold war and the red scare (where communist loyalty lies) If you were a union official you had to swear a loyalty oath as a way of weeding out communists. This law was not implemented in canada (unions were still pushing at this time, not the same push back as in the states) Leads to the purging of communists in the united states. In canada most of the purging of the communists is done by the unions not the government officials. Important because it wasn"t about just clipping the wings of unions, it was also important for changing the channel . Unions had captured a national sense (wave of sentiment about freedom) Labour had captured the flag (unions starting a war to defend democracy)
