Where the land is saturated with water; some areas could be seasonal, for a few days, some more permanent that develop year to year. Methane develops during anaerobic conditions and vegetation will be growing in these environments. Worldwide, found on every continent, all are adapted to different conditions. Riparian wetlands border rivers, lake system wetlands are close to reservoirs. The major ones are underlain by permafrost these cover the greatest extent. The map is an underestimate of the amount of land covered by permafrost: wetlands and human well being. Breakdown several contaminants because they host unique bacteria that can break down components. Involve the flow of water when there"s floods, water flowing through wetland will slow down and be absorbed and will minimize damage (less damage than there would have been if wetland wasn"t there) During the summer months they release freshwater to other water bodies which maintains water levels.
