LIFESCI 3C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Dama Gazelle, Waggle Dance, Evolutionarily Stable Strategy
Document Summary
Remember beginning of term, talked about honey bees have distinct movement (one individual in a group, Chapter 6 living in groups informs others about the source and quality of food) Foraging honey bee discovers new food source (flower or artificial feed). After this visit, over the next few min, (cid:373)a(cid:374)y other (cid:271)ees tra(cid:448)el to sa(cid:373)e lo(cid:272)atio(cid:374) indivdiually (cid:894)do(cid:374)"t tra(cid:448)el as groups(cid:895). They know precisely where the food is located. Now modern rschers used a modern observation hive: 2 feeders placed at different locations from the hive. At each location, visiting honeybees are marked with small spot of paint. A separate colour of paint is used at each station. So when a bee returns to the hive, can be determined which feeding site it visited. Bees waggle in a figure 8 pattern before sharing the collected food. Von frisch noticed that the bees returning from the same feeding source danced differently from those that arrived from a diff location.
