Pro-oxidant systems: pathways that generate reactive oxygen species (ros: ros: free radicals that contain oxygen, occurs as a result of metabolism, phagocytosis, etc, since it is the result of metabolism, it occurs at rest and during exercise. Ros build-up can cause damage to brain health (development of neurologic conditions), atherosclerosis (first step in this is the oxidation of ldl; ros is involved in this), etc. We need oxygen to live, yet it can have harmful effects on the body. Free radicals: chemical species with unpaired electrons which increases reactivity of atoms or molecules. Naturally, oxygen has 6 electrons in the outer shell; will be reduced and gain electrons. When it gains an electron, it now has 7 electrons and becomes a superoxide anion.
