2 main groups: alimentary canal, alimentary canal starts with the esophagus, gastrointestinal tract, gastro stomach. Intestinal intestines: continuous digestive tube through whole body. Function: digestion, breaks food into smaller fragments, break down into the smallest fragments to absorb the nutrients well, absorption, moves the digested fragments from the alimentary canal into the blood. Whatever that doesn"t get absorbed in the small intestine is then transferred into the large intestine. Pincivero, 2015: mechanical digestion, physical preparation of food for absorption, process of which food gets digested in different parts chewing, mixing food with enzymes (tongue), churning of food in stomach. All these have to be chemically and mechanically digested: absorption, movement of digested end products from gi lumen to the bloodstream (or lymph) small intestine. 34: we absorb lipids in the lymphatic system that eventually goes to the gastrointestinal tract, defecation, elimination of indigestible substances through the rectal canal and anus. Alimentary canal structure: esophagus to anal canal.
