Most frequently diagnosed cancer in women worldwide (1. 4 mil diagnoses/year; 460,000 deaths/year) Mortality rates dropping bc better treatments, specific chemotherapeutics. Incidence levels rising due to increased awareness and other factors. 85 y/o women have 1/9 chance of developing breast cancer. Older age at first birth and breastfeeding* *hormones existing in body for more years of life. 25% familial: family history, but no brca mutation present. 10% hereditary: positive for brca1 (breast cancer gene 1; chromosome 17) or brca2 (breast cancer gene 2; chromosome 13)
