Why do we care about constituents? the tree diagram. Once you know that something is a constituent, then you have evidence for how to draw. Tree diagrams represent one component of mental grammar. A notation for depicting how phrases are organized in the mind. Nodes can be related to each other. N v a p : label the category of each word, find the head(s) . D t c: for each head, check if there"s a: X : check that each node corresponds to a constituent! Verb: label word categories, identify heads, complements and specifiers, each phrase has 3 levels. A frog: label word categories, identify heads, complements and specifiers, each phrase has 3 levels. We draw a frog under a single node. Bought a car: label word categories, identify heads, complements and specifiers, each phrase has 3 levels. The dictionary that you carry on in your mind = mental grammar. Most (except for morphology) are done unconsciously.
