Regional varities: dialect (different accent + lexicon + grammar, accent: regional pronunciation of the standard language. Canadian english dialects area where it is spoken. Pacific west coast english british columbia and yukon. Sociolects: speech varieties based on: socio-economic status, gender, ethnicity, age, profession/occupation, etc. Standard language: superposed variety used by the government, schools, courts, media. Standard language is one of the dialects. Total number of speakers: 1. 5 billion+ Language families of the world (stopped at this slide) Controlling variables: you don"t need to control everything, you want to control certain variables that you think will have effect on the results. If there"s a particular variable, don"t control it: we want to minimize the confounding effect, (refer to lecture on september 20th, correlation is not causation. What variables are you controlling = explain why you are doing this. You need to give enough information so you can replicate.
