United states: mart was a rare combination of poet and man of action. It is considered one of the pre-eminent (preeminentes) literary figures of the americas: he died in the battle of dos r os in may of 1895, mart wrote forty-six versos sencillos (simple verses). Political, military, hero, speaker and poet and all great. Like the lands freed by him he was not born a son of any country, but many countries were born daughters of him. He had the courage(valent a) to wear a sword, he had the courtesy to wear a flower, and when he entered the halls (salones), he threw (arrojaba) his sword, and entering the battle (combates), he threw the flower. The peaks of the ande were no more to his eyes than admirable signs of his boldness (arrojos). And each liberated people, was a feat of the poet and was a poem of the soldier.
