MATLS 1M03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: The Modern Age, Industrial Revolution, Engineering Physics
Document Summary
Material structures and properties from micro to macro scoping scales. Looking into how a material is processed effects its properties. Civil: the materials used in constructing a building or bridge are crucial to the success of the structure. Mechanical: materials are important when designing a car or any other mechanical device. Engineering physics: when creating nuclear reactors, the material used will determine how well the reactor works. It is important that proper materials are used when creating a computer. Chemical: when processing certain chemical reactions, it is important that the reactors are made of appropriate materials that can with stand the specific temperature and a pressure of the reaction occurring. Bio engineering: the proper materials must be used when designing an implant to ensure the device will be durable and be able to withstand conditions with in the body with out interfering with anything else. During the ice age the only materials available were the ones naturally occurring in nature.
