The following is a simple guideline to aid you in organizing your thoughts when performing first day teaching with the patient. Think of a patient teaching session as chapters in a book. After greeting the patient from the main waiting room, bring them and family/significant other/friends to a teaching room. Introduce yourself as a radiation therapy student, and your role in the department. Verify pt date of birth (aka birthday is), address, phone number. Some side effects you may experience, and things you can do to minimize them. You are having________number of treatments as per dr. ______________ You can check in by scanning your schedule, and come directly to the unit waiting area tomorrow. Try to come in 15 minutes before treatment time to change into gown (if necessary) In case of being late/emergencies at home, call clinic number (at top of the schedule) ask for unit. (like to give extension of unit)
