MEDRADSC 1B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 27: Bone Resorption, Intervertebral Disc, Hyaline Cartilage
Document Summary
Lack bone density; cortex is shrinking, medullary cavity is growing. Higher incidence in postmenopausal women & the elderly (male & female); more petite you are, the higher the risk you have; males suffer the same, just don"t have estrogen. Fractures of spine, pelvis, & limbs is common. Increase ca intake & vitamin d (helps with absorption of ca); for all ages. Drugs like fosamax (an inhibitor of bone resorption) Loss of articular cartilage; when worn away, there are jagged pieces & cortical bone can break apart & get joint mice; this what causes the pain. Osteophyte (bony material being bone wherever, not always where they should be), spur/cyst formation (bone trying to regenerate); all are just growths where we aren"t supposed to see it. Hips, knees, lumbar & cervical vertebrae (large weight bearing joints), hands & feet. There is no space in b/n the bones (x-rays) Joint replacement if the individual cannot handle the pain.
