Introduce yourself, don"t appear rushed, avoid medical talk, provide privacy, use mr and mrs, provide privacy for conversation, provide opportunity for patient to talk, let patient know what is about to happen: empathy. Is successful when a patient feels that he or she has been seen, heard, and accepted as a person. Try to put yourself in the patient"s shoes; feel their feelings. Make eye contact, no physical barriers, be on their level, do not invade personal space without their consent. Do not interrupt, echo back keywords, guide conversation to keep on track. Never appear judgemental; never be arrogant, rude. Never say you have nothing to worry about : education.
