Document Summary

Double contrast- thin barium followed by air, demonstrated mucosal pattern in detail. Single contrast- thin barium only, gross pathology, children, debilitated patient. Diverticulum: outpouching of or herniation of the inner wall of the bowel. Polyps: saclike projection into the lumen of the bowel, can become inflamed, they bleed. Volvulus: twisting on its own mesentery, obstruction and localized necrosis. Intussusception: telescoping, less than 2 years old, can occur in adults. Patient prep: low residue diet 2-3 days, clear fluid diet- day prior to the exam, laxative, colonic lavage- if necessary. Manual cleaning out of the bowel (another enema tip is inserted), water pumped up. Closed bag system- single use, most are latex-free. Cold (40-45 f) has an analgesic effect and increases retention of contrast. May lead to colonic spasm if too cold. Room temperature or a little bit above (85-90 f) recommended by most experts. Caution too hot may scald mucosal lining.
