Increased rate of production (hemolytic: diseased liver not processing the bilirubin (cirrhosis & hepatitis, obstructive disease interfering with the secretion of bile, stone in duct (cbd, cancer (intrinsic/extrinsic) If 1 stone is formed, most likely more will be formed. Predisposing factors: genetic, age (over 40), excess weight, & females. Seen on us or in contrast studies (if radiopaque) Patient erect or in a lateral decubitus position. Most stones are radiopaque; seen in us; will roll patient around bc they are gravity dependent (how they distinguish. Start in the gallbladder between a stone & a lesion) Mercedes benz sign; lucent areas in the stones produce the mercedes benz sign. Area pointing to a stone w in the gallbladder. Huge bc there is probably a stone in the common bile duct. 1 of the most frequent disease of the biliary tree. May occur alone but usually occur together.
