Harry walters is an 82 year old caucasian male who has previously been treated for prostate cancer 8 years ago. He appeared to be doing well post treatment until recently. He presented to his doctor complaining of pain in his lower back. He states that the pain tends to come and go, and it appears to be worse at night and may be relieved by movement. Mr. walters was sent for an x-ray of his back as well as a bone scan. It has been confirmed that there are bone metastases in his lumbar spine. It has been explained to the patient that metastatic bone disease is not curable. The goal of his treatment is to concentrate on palliation of pain and to prevent fractures to weight bearing bones. Mr. walters is being seen in ct simulation to be planned for radiation therapy. The use of radiation is important for local control of the lesion and relieving pain.
