Depends on the underlying pathology that causes hemoptysis. Tobacco smoking- increases risk of getting lung cancer. Primary lung cancer is typically presented with hemoptysis: includes nsc and sc lung carcinoma, bronchogenic carcinoma is a common lung cancer that causes hemoptysis. Cardiovascular conditions that results in pulmonary hypertension: pulmonary embolism, left ventricle heart failure. 2 vascular systems supply blood to the lungs: bronchial. & pulmonary circulatory systems: bronchial arteries originate from the upper portion of the descending thoracic aorta, supplies major airways/structures. When pulmonary system is compromised: the bronchial supply increases this causes enlargement of the bronchial vessels, increased blood pressure or erosion by bacterial agents rupture of enlarged vessels blood spills into respiratory tree hemoptysis. The major source of massive hemoptysis is the bronchial circulation: the pulmonary circulation account for 5% of massive hemoptysis cases. Ranges from minimal blood in sputum to >500 ml of blood in sputum.
