MEDRADSC 3DA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: G2 Phase, Paradoxical Reaction, Fetus
Document Summary
Prevalence of peds ct: rapidly expanding, 7x increase in radiation dose over the years, ct is 11% of the di exams done today, but contributes 67% of the us effective dose. In the us, 11% of ct scans done between 2000-2007 were performed on children. Increased dose and increased sensitivity: combination of increased organ dose and a higher susceptibility make peds. Ct a justifiable concern: peds ct scan has a 1/1000 chance of causing a fatal cancer, most children will have to have more than one scan also. In an adult population, the risk is believed to be approx 1/10000 but varies considerably with age and area of interest. What we see as small and inconsequential might be large and terrifying. If using manual ma, can be placed on patient prior to scout. If using automatic tube current modulation must place after scout: some concern over impact on image quality.
