MEDRADSC 3DA3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography, Vasodilation, Frontal Lobe
Document Summary
Lecture 8 - advanced ct: perfusion ct (for brain) romans p. 242-251. Overview of stroke: third most frequent cause of death in north america (american heart association, 20 to 30% don"t survive, 55% left with a disability. Symptoms: face drooping, arms can they raise both, speech slurring/jumbling, time to call 911 right away. In stroke patients, may have an area of infarcted tissue, surrounded by penumbra: penumbra is the target, penumbra is ischemic area around infarcted tissue. If arrival within 6 hours at a site offering endovascular thrombectomy, cta must be performed also: visualize blood vessels, assess and identify target for appropriateness of treatment. Different modalities to assess: early detection of acute cerebral ischemia is extremely beneficial, xenon ct (imaging after inhaling xenon gas), spect, pet, perfusion and diffusion weighted mri are useful methods to evaluate acute strokes. Other modalities: hampered by limited availability, cost, patient tolerance.
