Their success generated great amounts of revenue that they reinvested in their company, including the work of one of their engineers, godfrey hounsfield. Improves diagnosis, surgical planning, etc: revolutionized diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy treatment planning. Image quality: vast improvement, high diagnostic quality, excellent contrast resolution, improving spatial resolution. Improved patient care: has increased demand and application of the modality, spatial resolution: ability of a system to resolve small objects (as separate forms) that are very close together. Measured in lp/mm: contrast resolution: ability of the scanner to demonstrate very small differences in tissue contrast (grey matter) Are they straight: 2d image resembling plain radiograph, usually ap and lat. Increases scanning potential of larger volume in less time, less misregistration artifacts/motion artifacts. Includes new x-ray tube and detector technologies: tube continually rotates while table continually moves. Isotropic resolution: central goal of helical scanning.
