Lecture 11: the research process & study design. Refers to the study plan or strategy. The study question/hypothesis should drive the stud design. The design selected must be appropriate to the study goals, time scale & available resources. Resources can be time (ie a day/week) Data: weight, age, wait times, kvp values. Don"t mean much until you start to analyze them. Information: taking raw data & start looking for patterns ie) # of patient"s that exceed the wait times in a certain period of time. Study designs can be classified in how they sample the population, how the collect exposure or outcome data. Data collected can be quantitative or qualitative in nature. Qualitative studies generally do not test hypotheses but are very useful for exploring ideas & developed questions for further study. Quantitative statistical methods can be used to test hypotheses. Qualitative: also a way to get in deeper into your research question.
