Distinctive features with video is that it"s time based. Multimedia artists harness the distinctive features" of medium technology by challenging the viewer. The message may not be what we think it is. Ceci n"est pas une pipe (this is not a pipe) - rene magritte. This painting is a representation of a pipe. Artist used paint, canvas and power of observation. The message is that what you think you"re seeing isn"t really what you"re seeing - static and closed. The treachery of the image is that the physical thing isn"t actually there. Our interpretation can sit outside the intended meaning. Mcluhan put forth auto-amputation" and self-amputation" in a discussion of how our senses are modi ed by our use of technology. Mollman (2015) give the eerie sense of being all alone together. Exersize #1 - focus on observing something, not doing something. Photography demonstrates a still moment, video shows the movement of time, audio provides no visuals.
