Protocols for the interpretation (so could be understood by machines) human readable files vs. binary files (both are binary files) Never have direct access to files, usually through software, have 3 different way to read it human readable files text (ascii code) you can interpret it, so can computer. Programming source code stored in text files. Every character of text files is 1 bits (bytes) Files from internet html source meant for human and computer to understand. Using text encoding while also have another meaning to computer. Binary files files not readable for human, incomprehensible. Binary format make sense when dealing with large files working formats files vs. deliverable files working formats gimp is working formats that you don"t shares. Meant to be inside a work process. Flexibility, often bigger, more quality of media, but non-portable.
