Lots of things going on in the late 40"s and 50"s that lead to this age. Major labels didn"t like it because it didn"t fit their system of making music (division of labour) Making cover versions worked up until 1956, until they stopped making money. But bribery is the way the music industry had been running for decads (and the major records were just as involved) All of this was ultimately playing into a racist fear of the middle class whites. Black culture was coming in to middle class homes. And there was a bigger issue taking place at the same time that was adding to the panic of middle class whites. The golden age/ birth of rock and roll coincides with the emergence of the civil rights movement: may 1954 brown vs the board of education, december 1955 rosa parks and the montgomery bus boycott.
