The end of the (cid:498)big band(cid:499) era: influenced by jazz, mostly instrumental, dance oriented, vocalists were seen as being of secondary importance, big band is the pop music of before 1945. In general, music styles peak, and eventually decline in popularity but never actually go away (arc of popularity) Band leaders such as benny godman, count basie, duke ellington, Tommy dorsey were the stars of this period. Bands were beginning to get smaller in the years following ww2: its expensive to have a very large band. Focus also went more to the singer post ww2: ex. Music industry divided into 3 distinct categories: pop: category that gets the most attention white/middle class/ urban audience, this is for economical reasons, this is where the money is, race: eventually changed to rhythm and blues.
