Payola scandal (1950s: payola refers to record industry officials playing djs to play certain records, this practice had been going on since the beginning of the recording industry, even outside of the recording industry. Paying people to play certain live music: blew up at the end of the 1950s because independent record labels, like sun records of chess records, had taken a risk by recording regional or novelty music. They wanted to undermined the success of the independent labels. They went after the independent labels for practicing payola: this went to trial, alan freed"s career was ruined by this, dick clark (american bandstand) came out of the payola scandal untouched and had a remarkable career. The twist: dick clark has a hand in the success of this song. Needed this song, needed the twist : dick clark put it out there, but it was something that audiences across the generational divide wanted.
