They went after the independent labels for practicing payola: this went to trial, alan freed"s career was ruined by this, dick clark (american bandstand) came out of the payola scandal untouched and had a remarkable career. The twist: dick clark has a hand in the success of this song. Needed this song, needed the twist : dick clark put it out there, but it was something that audiences across the generational divide wanted.
