Music crossing demographic and chart lines starts to happen in the late 1940s/early 1950s. Early rock and roll: bill haley and the comets, elvis presley, rock around the clock cited as the first big, hit, rock and roll record. Good boy but : poor family from the south, consumed black music growing up, musically: best known as singer, not instrumentalist, elvis"s image: raised controversy, dangerous. Buddy holly: different image from other rockabilly artists, romantic love, childlike innocence, musical importance: Song doesn"t fade out fade out is usually calming (makes it seem like it"s not. Protagonist who wants and loves peggy sue; song is about the protagonist"s own. In the early 1960s girl group music was huge: mainstream pop sounding music of the performers who were called teen idols, southern-soul music, motown. September 24: huge back lash of rock and roll in the late 1950s- banned from being played at certain places, lots of moral outrage in white culture.
