If was white, would be called the king of rock and roll: not elvis. Musical characteristics: songwriter, singer, guitar player, energy, fast, repeated notes in melody (both guitar and voice) Like little richard: bent-note playing, distinctive of his guitar playing. Influence of country: diction: appeal to white audience, no accent. Performance: relationship of guitar to body, guitar as phallic symbol, masculinity/power, concept of guitar hero , moves around a lot little effort to produce sounds. Fluid: first image of powerful, effortless virtuosity, signature move, duck walk, willie mae big mama thornton. Hound dog : recorded first, recorded later by elvis. 1950"s: post wwii, baby boom, economically/politically stable, youth culture with time and money. Disposable income for music: music distinct from parent"s music, crossover of black music into white culture.
