Broader aim - keep kids off the streets - providing a healthy social alternative to gangs, Children did not have a strong family structure - gangs offered belonging to them. Typically around the age of 12 they would join gangs to find identity and belonging. Mfl - musician group leader, mt support/facilitate. 1960s forcibly move from inner city cape town. Witness horrific acts of violence - the kids need the mta support still for the psychological factors. Started mt at a school in heideveld, 2003. Referrals from teachers (from all 9 schools in area) Children who have been abused, lost family members (gang violence, hiv/aids, drugs) Led to realization that there was a need for after school positive social group experience. Negative stigma surrounding kids involved in mt - they were kids that "needed help" Rather than pinpointing a few, it invited all to engage in mt parents in jail (music groups) mfl. Large interest from children and local musicians.
