Document Summary
Filtering by pinnae is a monaural cue for localization. Sounds from different points in height all sound the same: pinna shape is unique to every individual, helps gather and focus sound. Binaural cues for localization: shows the brain thinking for us. Interaural time difference (itd: difference in time that it takes for sound to reach each ear. Less that 1ms difference, but very important in distinguishing sounds: works for low frequency sounds. So, high frequency waves (short wavelength) are blocked by the head. Low frequency waves (longer wavelength) go around the head: not equal at different frequencies (only works in some frequency ranges) Figure 3. 4 (pg 43): know how to label this. Journey to the center of the ear: hudspeth lab video. Encoding pitch in the cochlea: time theory. Time theory gets worse and worse for higher frequencies. Critical bands: the distance that two notes must be to make them sound crunched together, caused by overtones.
