NURSING 1F03 Lecture 6: PBL - Menopause Readings
Document Summary
Guiding your patient through menopause (american nurse today) Menopause is normal, not a disease or a disorder. Nurses can help improve quality of life by providing education and counselling on symptom management, bleeding, and other problems. Most common vasomotor symptoms are hot flashes and sweats. Sudden sensation of intense heat starting in the neck or chest area, lasts several mins. Body temp deregulation also causes sweats (most common at night) Common during menopausal transition and early postmenopausal years. Sleeping problems can arise from vasomotor symptoms, mid-life changes, or chronic conditions (arthritis, fibromyalgia, respiratory disease, gi problems, etc. ) Skin thinning scalp hair and unwanted facial hair result of increased ratio of androgen to estrogen at this time. Collagen and elastin loss - results from reduced estrogen. Dry skin - results from decreased oil production in skin (most common condition related to aging skin) Acne - results from increased androgen - estrogen levels.
