People involved in health promotion must consider the meaning of health for themselves and for others. Recognizing differences in the meaning of health can clarify outcomes and expectations in health promotion and enhance the quality of health care. Health is a state of physical, mental, spiritual, and social functioning that relates a person"s potential and is experienced within a developmental context. Although health is in part an individual"s responsibility, health also requires collective action to ensure a society and an environment in which people can act responsibly to support health. There culture and beliefs of people can also influence health action. Recognizes the interconnection between people and their physical and social environments. It is multidimensional, extending from the individual to the surrounding community, and including the context within from which the person functions. These factors can limit or extend health and healthy behaviors.
