Week 10: Learning in Nursing
-Andragogy: adult learning
-learning is a lifelong process, adults have stronger base of previous knowledge to draw from
-purpose of learning is goal oriented: to solve problems, accomplish tasks
-self-directed learning is more proactive
-allows for differences in: motivation, interest, experience, knowledge/skill level
-learning plan looks at required, desires, and current level of competency
-Competence: nurse’s ability to use his/her knowledge, skill, judgement, attitudes, values &
beliefs to perform in a given role, situation on practice setting
CNO Roles
-establish requirements for entry to practice
-articulation and promoting practice standards
-enforce standards of practice & conduct
-protect the public
-administering Quality Assurance program
➔ Nurses engage in practice reflection & by setting & achieving learning goals
➔ Required by law to do formal reflection once a year
➔ Support nurses in practice according to CNO’s standards of practice
➔ 2 learning goals per year, update plan during year, keep for 2 years
3 Domains of Learning (develop goals from these)
Cognitive/knowledge: emphasises learning of information, knowledge acquisition & problem
solving
Affective/attitude/values/beliefs: concerned with interests, attitudes & beliefs
Psychomotor/skills: deals with motor skills. Precise skills that you would undertake
SMART Format
-specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-limited
-what knowledge, skills & attitudes do you have, what is required
-is this relevant for current work, how will you measure it
-what resources are needed? Are the credible, reliable & evidence based
-activities used to learn depends on the specific questions
