Document Summary

The development of neurogenic/autonomic and/or neuroglycopenic symptoms. Activation of the sympathetic nervous system results in the neurogenic/autonomic symptoms of trembling, palpitations, sweating, anxiety, hunger, nausea and tingling. Abrupt cessation of glucose delivery to the brain results in neuroglycopenic symptoms such as dif culty concentrating, confusion, weakness, drowsiness, vision changes, dif culty speaking, headaches and dizziness. Below than normal blood glucose levels hypoglycemia generally occurs when bg levels are between 2. 5-3. 3 mmol/l in diabetic patients treated with insulin. Symptoms respond to the administration of a carbohydrate. Moderate: autonomic and neuroglycopenic symptoms, able to self-treat. Severe: unable to self-treat, requires assistance, unconsciousness may occur, bg usually below 2. 8 mmol/l. Relative excess of insulin in the blood can be the result of too much exogenous insulin, or when insulin secretagogues are used. Can also be linked to de cits in glucose counter-regulation this is particularly important in type 1 diabetes.
