Characterized rival states as evil, backward, scheming, uncivilized, etc. when many governments were authoritarian. Propaganda posters were out by the government to promote nationalism in the times of war etc. Scheming mechanisms, and the efforts of the first world war. Othering enemies and turning them into an idea of an enemy (civilians were subjected to this type of propaganda) For the major powers war was very popular: a lot of support from within society towards the war. Democracy: there was little opportunity to speak out against the war, anti- war movements were difficult at this time (without being labeled)
