PHILOS 2H03 Lecture 9: Philos 2H03 - Lecture - Feb 3
Document Summary
Focus is section 9 of critique of judgement. He begins with asking us to consider question if when judging beauty what comes first. Is it first pleasure and then judgement or vice versa. He attached very high importance to this question. The question is which one has priority, specifically logical priority: which one is decisive, pleasure or judgement. If pleasure comes first, then pleasure regardless of origin decides the issue. Taste requires something more than pleasure to be decisive about beauty. Pleasure peculiar to aesthetic judgement, meaning it must be unique: not the same as the pleasure with food. Whe(cid:374) judgi(cid:374)g (cid:271)eauty, (cid:373)ust (cid:271)e a(cid:449)a(cid:396)e it"s (cid:374)ot just pe(cid:396)so(cid:374)al pleasu(cid:396)e: something universal about this pleasure, e. g looking at sunset. In actuality we are not thinking about objects, but rather reflecting on our own perception. What you feel when you become aware of beauty is your mind.
