PHILOS 2N03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Immanuel Kant, Categorical Imperative, Egotism
Document Summary
Consequentialist theories: consequentialist theories of ethics tell us that we should make out ethical decisions with an eye to the consequences of our actions, forward-looking. Non-consequentialist theories: non-consequentialist theories seek to answer our moral questions without reference to good or bad effects in the future. Do i owe them a thank you card? did they do something that deserves that: retribution, war reparations, loyalty. Pluralism blends both consideration of actions in the future and principles. The belief that the morally right thing for people to do is to act in accord with their own desires or their own self-interest, regardless of how that effects others. Reasons in favour: individual welfare is of ethical importance, moral consideration for our well- being, this is a fairly simple system of guring out how to behave. Reasons against: this theory is compatible with great harm to others, any behaviours might be considered good in this theory.
